A Word from ATA Lobbyist Barry Aarons

Regarding the Middle East there are three party talks - regarding North Korean nuclear issues there are six party talks - and with regard to the Arizona budget there are five party talks. And that's just what has been happening since the legislature concluded its special session on the budget and transmitted the budget bills to the Governor but without the revenue package that she has repeatedly called for. Governor Brewer has until September 5 to sign or veto the budget. Meanwhile, the leadership of both parties in both houses have been trying to use the time productively to try to craft a revenue package that can pass both houses and satisfy the Governor's request. As Senate Democrat Leader Jorge Luis Garcia noted, " . . . it is a Herculean task."

On the Centennial front several legislators have been engaging Centennial Coordinator Karen Churchard with a raft of ideas for programs and celebrations. Representative Jerry Weiers has been organizing a "Copper Chopper" project and Representative David Gowan is putting together concepts on Capitol Restoration. Legislators are beginning to recognize the importance to our state of a quality Centennial Celebration which has been very exciting for the organizers.
