Fast Facts

Tourism’s Benefit to Taxpayers:

  • Tourism is Arizona’s “blue chip” industry that proves its value day in and day out by improving residents’ quality of life, creating jobs and keeping taxes low.
  • Tourism is the Common Denominator:  it is the only export industry bringing prosperity to all 15 Arizona counties and is second only to microelectronics in generating earnings for Arizona's residents.
    • Unlike any other export industry, travel industry earnings are spread throughout the entire state and have shown consistent growth, exerting a stabilizing effect on Arizona's economy.
  • In 2008, direct travel spending was associated with $1.4 billion in state and local tax revenues and $1.2 billion in federal tax revenues. This is equivalent to $1,080 per Arizona household.

Economic Impact of the Arizona Travel Industry:

  • A record 35.2 million domestic and international overnight travelers, equal to roughly 96,000 visiters per day, visited Arizona in 2007.
  • Total direct travel spending in Arizona in 2008 was $18.5 billion.
  • The total (direct and secondary) impact of the Arizona travel industry in 2008 was 310,000 jobs and $10.2 billion earnings.
  • For every dollar the Arizona Office of Tourism (AOT) invests in advertising, Arizona's economy receives a significant return on investment:
    • For each $1 spent, AOT generated $180 in direct travel spending.
    • For each $1 spent, AOT generated $14.95 in state and local taxes.
