“The Unity Dinner was a meaningful celebration and another great demonstration of the strength and commitment of the tourism industry, despite the tough economic climate,” said Sherry Henry, Director of the Arizona Office of Tourism. On April 15, nearly 600 leaders from the business, government and the community joined to celebrate the economic impact of tourism and to honor the contributions of three extraordinary Arizonans for their leadership and support of the industry. Honored this year were Bob Bondurant of Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, Craig Jackson of Barrett-Jackson Auction Company and Bryan Sperber of Phoenix International Raceway.

Bondurant, Jackson & Sperber were called to stage to discuss, informally, their individual businesses, the automotive industry and the extent in which they are intertwined and work together to support the prosperity of the tourism industry. The support in which these gentlemen provide to the industry was evident.

The Bondurant School, in 2008 alone, drew over 1,700 travelers to its driving courses or a direct spending impact of $4.2 million to Maricopa County. Barrett-Jackson’s annual auction, among the most profitable draws for the world’s biggest-spending travelers, brings an average of $100 million to Arizona’s economy. Phoenix International Raceway, through its eight racing events and non-race activities, generates an economic impact of $473 million annually.

Chairman of the Board Greg W. Gilstrap said, “There couldn’t have been a better forum to explain the impact and necessity of tourism to Arizona’s economy.” With legislative attendance at its highest ever, attendees joined over 20 State Legislators and a number of mayors and elected officials from across the state. Gilstrap added, “With the FY 2010 budget closing in the next few weeks, we’re confident this Unity Dinner played a significant role in ensuring the sustainability of tourism funding…which ultimately, ensures the future of Arizona’s economy.”
